Faculty of Dentistry


The Faculty of Dentistry is a World Health Organisation (WHO) collaborating Centre for Oral Health that trains oral health personnel in Africa and undertakes research on infectious disease in dentistry like Hepatitis, HIV and TB. UWC`s Faculty of Dentistry is one of five dental schools in South Africa and produces 47% of all new graduates in the country. The faculty trains dental professionals at undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist levels.
Faculty objectives:
The Faculty of Dentistry is an integral part of UWC’s health and welfare sector. It strives to be a leading academic oral health training institution – locally, internationally and in the southern African region. The faculty is actively committed to excellence, accountability and relevance in its training.
It offers two undergraduate programmes:
  • BChD (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) – (Dentistry)
  • BOH (Bachelor of Oral Health) – (Oral Hygiene)

BChD (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
Duration of the programme
The undergraduate dental curriculum is a five-year programme leading to a BChD degree.
The BOH programme extends over three academic years, leading to the BOH degree.
Pre-clinic education and training
This takes place at the main campus in the Faculties of Science, Department Bioscience, Physics, Chemistry, etc.
